Patrice was a typical orphan of the War. She had lost her parents, her home,
had little to eat, and barely any type of education. Her days were spent
walking through the shattered streets of her once beautiful city looking for
food or a place to spend the cold November nights. At fourteen she was
already a pretty young woman, although the scars of the last six months had
clearly taken their toll. Her once beautiful reddish hair had become matted
and scraggly, her deep hazel eyes gradually taking on a dim, hazy
appearance. She had started to show signs of her blossoming womanhood, with
full delicate breasts, although the ragged pieces of clothing she wore to
keep out the cold also kept in the secrets that adolescence had bestowed on
her. She had few friends, most had been killed by the soldiers, others
leaving with what was left of their families and possessions. She did have
one close friend however, Jupp.Jupp had known Patrice since his parents had
first moved to town from a farm
about thirty kilometers outside of town. Like Patrice, his parents had also
been killed in one of the first raids, and with no one else left to turn to,
he and Patrice had turned to each other in order to survive. Jupp was about
the same age as Patrice, having just had his fourteenth birthday days before
the bombs started falling. Now they both lived in a burned out old building
a few blocks from their old home. Each day Jupp would go steal some bread
or fruit to feed the two as Patrice traveled about begging for coins or
whatever she could get.
At night, when the chills of the coming winter settled in on the town, they
would build a small fire in an old fireplace and eat their meager rations,
warm under a blanket they had pulled from what was left of Jupp's home.
There, laying next to each other for warmth, they would look up at the stars
through the broken old roof of the building and fall into a restless sleep.
The remainder of the story will be told by Jupp, seeing the events as
he would see them.
I woke up about nine this morning, at least it was about nine, my father's
old pocket watch doesn't keep very good time these days. The fire was
almost out, but I managed to save it and get it going again to give us some
kind of warmth in the harsh morning air. I sat there for a minute, staring
